Theresa May has personally apologised to the Windrush generation

It was under Theresa May's stewardship of the Home Office that the decision was taken in 2013 to make the UK a “hostile environment” for illegal immigrants. AP

May is under pressure to act after it emerged that thousands of people had been threatened with losing access to services such as the NHS, deportation and even detention if they fail to show valid documentation - however in many cases papers were never published.

It is inhumane and cruel for so many of that Windrush generation to have suffered for so long in this condition and for the Secretary of State to be making a statement on the issue only today.

Labour MP David Lammy, whose parents were from Guyana, said that the government's immigration policies had led to a "day of national shame", adding "and it has come about because of a "hostile environment" policy that was begun under her Prime Minister".

It has seen some Windrush generation residents, who might never have felt the need to apply for a United Kingdom passport before, left without the documentation now required by officials.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, who herself moved to Britain from Dominica when she was two years old, said the issue was one for individual countries to resolve with London.

The raging MP blasted: "Let us call it how it is".

Tighter immigration rules have affected a proportion of these people who are now being classified as illegal immigrants, meaning they have lost their right to work or to claim health care (The Guardian).

Hitting out at "far-right rhetoric", he insisted Rudd "should know" how many people had been wrongly made to return to their countries of origin.

"Will the Secretary of State apologise properly?"

The Labour MP has called for an immediate amnesty for anyone who arrived in the United Kingdom as a child between 1948 and 1971, gathering a petition of over 100,000 signatures - the figure needed to potentially trigger a debate in Parliament.

HOME SECRETARY Amber Rudd has apologised for the treatment of the Windrush generation, saying it was "wrong" and "appalling" that some face deportation.

However, Ms Nokes - when asked if Windrush generation residents had been wrongly removed from the United Kingdom - told Channel 4 News: "Potentially they have been and I'm very conscious that it's very much in error, and that's an error that I want to put right".

"That admiration remains in place".

But Ms Rudd told the House of Commons that she would not know whether this had happened until she meets high commissioners from Caribbean nations later this week. This is about individuals.

"This is about individuals and we have seen the individual stories and they have been, some of them, bad to hear". "That is why I have acted". That is why I have put a very clear time limit on the amount of time it will take to correct this. "That is why I am setting up a new area in my department to ensure that we have a completely new approach to how their situation is regularised".

After the arrival of the first group of West Indian immigrants on the ship Empire Windrush in 1948, many more followed to help rebuild Britain in the wake of World War II.

But the Home Office did not keep a record of those granted leave to remain or issue any paperwork confirming it, meaning it is hard for the individuals to now prove they are in Britain legally.

They were given indefinite leave to remain, a situation which changed with a 1971 law - but many who failed to get their papers in order are now being treated as undocumented or illegal migrants.

Rudd said no charges would be levied on those affected and help would be provided to anyone trying to prove their right to stay in the UK.

His case has still not been resolved.
