Putin Dampens Tensions, as US, French, UK Strike on Syria Looms

Tensions reached a high point in 2014 when pro Russian forces in Ukraine were accused of downing a civilian airliner killing nearly 300 people aboard

A joint military operation, possibly with France rather than the U.S.in the lead, could send a message of worldwide unity about enforcing the prohibitions on chemical weapons.

On Wednesday, he again warned Russian Federation of being an ally of the Assad regime.

Mattis said no decision had been made about carrying out missile strikes.

Douma and the sprawling eastern Ghouta region near the capital, Damascus, had been under rebel control since 2012 and was a thorn in the side of Assad's government, threatening his seat of power with missiles and potential advances for years. In Russia, Syria's main military ally, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged against "any steps which could lead to an escalation of tensions". Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and "smart!", he threatened.

Russian Federation has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and has helped turn the tide of war in his favour since entering the conflict in September 2015.

The strikes were a response to an alleged chemical weapons attack carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime on April 7.

Trump did not detail what a strike on Syria would look like, or whether these would be USA missiles.

With tensions running high, Russian warships sailed out of their base in the Syrian port of Tartus in what retired Gen. Vladimir Shamanov, the head of foreign affairs committee in the lower house of the Russian parliament, described as a maneuver to avoid a possible USA blow.

But British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was little doubt the Syrian government used a barrel bomb to deliver the chemicals at Douma. Concerns that the USA could be approaching crisis point, due to the massive tax cuts and substantial increases in spend from the government. A statement after the cabinet meeting was limited, saying that Britain believes the use of chemical weapons should not go "unchallenged".

"Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' " Trump tweeted Wednesday, referring to US missiles.

They did not eliminate the probability for a US-Russia conflict, stating Moscow was quite anxious about "the unsafe escalation" also "aggressive policies" in which specific government bodys are making.

The liberated city is allegedly the site of a chemical attack which has been reported by rebel-linked activists, as well as the controversial White Helmets organization.

Mattis said he personally believes Syria is guilty of an "inexcusable" use of chemical weapons, while noting that the worldwide fact-finding team would likely fall short of determining who was responsible.

On April 6, the Trump administration unleashed additional sanctions against seven Russian oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin along with 12 companies they own or control.

May's office said they agreed on the need to deter Assad's government from further such attacks.

"Given that Trump was supposed to meet with Putin in his home city of St. Petersburg, we invited the new American president to visit us". After a purported chemical weapons attack in Syria, he allowed a US missile strike on a Syrian air base go unanswered, apparently trying to leave the door open for better relations with Washington.

The Kommersant newspaper quoted anonymous Defense Ministry sources as saying that Russia's General Staff was in touch with the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and expected to receive coordinates on airstrike targets from the Pentagon to avoid Russian casualties.

Russian lawmakers have warned the United States that Moscow would view an airstrike on Syria as a war crime and that it could trigger a direct U.S-Russian military clash.

The claim comes after a week in which Russian diplomats and military officers denied the attack happened, blamed the rebels for attacking themselves and accused foreign intelligence operatives.
