Justice Department sues California over 'sanctuary' laws

Trump Administration Sues California Over Sanctuary-State Law

Through promises to fight in court, California lawmakers hit back at the Trump Administration after it filed a lawsuit against the state claiming three of its "sanctuary state" laws protecting undocumented immigrants obstruct the federal government's ability to enforce immigration policy. Jerry Brown; and the state's attorney general, Xavier Becerra, over three state laws passed in recent months, saying they made it impossible for federal immigration officials to do their jobs and deport criminals who were born outside the United States.

Senate Bill 54, which took effect January 1, bars state and local law enforcement officials from asking people their immigration status, prohibits them from holding migrants for pickup by ICE, and limits how much information they're allowed to provide to ICE officers.

"The provisions of state law at issue have the goal and effect of making it more hard for federal immigration officers to carry out their responsibilities in California", the complaint filed in Sacramento states.

Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.

What so-called sanctuary cities (and states, in California's case) have been doing has been declining (in most cases) to share information about a person's immigration status with the federal government. "I'm going to use every power I have to fight that".

The statement also reiterated some of Schaaf's criticism of the Trump administration.

Last week, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned the public about a pending ICE operation, telling immigrants that they don't have to open their doors for federal immigration agents if they don't have a warrant.

Afterward, she said of Sessions: "How dare you" vilify members of the community, distract people from a broken immigration system that breaks up families and distort the reality of declining violent crime in a "sanctuary city" like Oakland.

According to the Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Thomas Homan, this puts the lives of both officers and American citizens at risk.

UPDATE: On Twitter, Newsom has responded to being called "an embarrassment" by the attorney general, who he describes as "a$3 man whose legacy is targeting immigrants, re-waging the failed War on Drugs, sucking-up to private prison profiteers, and apologizing for white supremacists". So obviously the attorney general has found it hard to be just a normal attorney general.

The California Peace Officers' Association is one of several large law enforcement advocacy groups in the state. The new lawsuit says those requests are improper, and the state has "no lawful interest in investigating federal law enforcement efforts". As I said above... apparently two can play at this game. Brown told the AG that "political stunts" like those work in Washington, not California. He is scheduled to speak at the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel - the new hotel next to the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento - at 8:05 a.m.

Gov. Jerry Brown tweeted Sessions' visit will only "further divide and polarize America" while Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state won't be "bullied" by the Trump Administration.
