Opioid overdoses spiked 28 percent in OH a year ago, CDC says

Opioid overdoses seen in hospital emergency rooms are way up. Timely treatment with naloxone can reverse the effects of opioids

The US Midwest was worst hit with overdoses surging by 70%, according to the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The US opioid epidemic is accelerating, with hospital emergency room visits for overdoses from drugs like heroin, fentanyl and prescription painkillers up 30 percent from 2016 to 2017, US officials said Tuesday.

"We have an emergency on our hands", says acting CDC Director Anne Schuchat.

"Research shows that people who have had an overdose are more likely to have another".

Benjamin Miller with the Well Being Trust, a national foundation that explores holistic health issues, said the latest CDC data on opioid overdoses is tragic, unsurprising and offers the latest "reflection of our country's inability to have a timely and comprehensive response to these issues".

"As medical professionals are becoming more aware of the potential for a patient to have an opioid overdose, the number of suspected cases will increase", she said.

"[This] means 115 people die each day from opioid overdose", she said. But those increases varied dramatically from state to state, even within a region.

"I meet with those on the frontlines of this opioid crisis in OH regularly", said a statement from Portman.

That study demonstrated an expansion of 29.7 percent in 52 wards in 45 states between July through September of 2016 and a similar period in 2017, as per the report.

The state of Kentucky saw a significant decrease of overdose rates, at 15 percent.

In states where the opioid crisis has been especially prevalent, backlogs have emerged.

From July 2016 through September 2017, opioid overdoes "increased for men and women, all age groups, and all regions".

Increase naloxone distribution (an overdose-reversing drug) to first responders, family and friends, and other community members in affected areas, as policies permit. That's in line with early overdose death reports from those states, officials said.

The report found the rise in overdoses did not discriminate when affecting cities and towns of all types, with the most rural areas seeing a 21 percent increase, and the most urban areas seeing a large and steady increase in overdoses ranging up to 54 percent.

SCHUCHAT: We think that the number of people addicted to opioids is relatively stable, but the substances are more unsafe than, you know, five years ago.

The study comes just a week after the White House held a week-long opioid summit.

STEIN: Kolodny says the nation needs billions of dollars to provide treatment for the millions of Americans struggling with their addiction.
