E-Cigarette Use Exposes Teens to Toxic Chemicals

E-cigarettes contain cancer-causing chemicals similar to those found in traditional cigarettes, according to new research exploring the unknown dangers of electronic nicotine delivery systems, especially as their use becomes more widespread among teenagers. Those who only vape had higher levels of certain chemicals in their body than traditional smokers and nonsmokers, tied to the "flavoring" used in many vape products. The two types of cigarette utilize caused the nearness of considerably more elevated amounts of perilous chemicals in the clients' bodies, including acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide and crotonaldehyde, the group announced. And then the teens who use both cigarettes showed levels of toxic organic compounds three times higher on average than the kids who only use e-cigarettes.

Using e-cigarettes has been promoted as a way to help adult smokers cut back or quit smoking, or at least to minimize the health damage that smoking causes. "In contrast, youth who have already begun cigarette experimentation represent a population at high risk of progression to greater levels of cigarette use later in adolescence and into adulthood", Benjamin W. Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD, from the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and the department of preventive and restorative dental sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues wrote. The National Center for Biotechnology Information says,"Acrylonitrile is a highly poisonous compound used widely in the manufacture of plastics, adhesives and synthetic rubber".

Acrolein "is toxic to humans following inhalation, oral or dermal exposure", the Environmental Protection Agency says.

E-cigarettes, or vape pens, consolidate seasoned liquid and nicotine to convey a less unforgiving type of smoking. The rising number of young Americans smoking e-cigarettes are at great risk for exposing themselves to these cancerous contaminants despite the products being marketed as healthier.

Hess said there are countless other studies that prove vaping is 95 percent safer than smoking traditional cigarettes.

Under-18s are nearly three times more likely to use e-cigarettes than adults, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those chemicals, as well, are associated with a higher cancer risk.

'E-cigarettes have the potential to addict the next generation, ' he said. And, the groups that used both e-cigarettes and smoked tobacco cigarettes also had three times higher level of toxic chemicals than in the e-cigarette-only group.

Many studies support the theory that kids who vape are more likely to go on to use other tobacco products, but there hasn't been much hard evidence about how directly risky e-cigarettes are. In 2016, the CDC reported that 11 percent of US high schoolers had vaped in the past 30 days.
