Doctor 'performs brain surgery on wrong patient' in Kenya

Kenyatta National Hospital. Inset the hospital’s CEO Lilly Koros

A team of doctors in Kenya have accidentally performed brain surgery on the wrong patient.

The staff at the hospital were later defended by the head of the Kenyan doctors" union, who said the mix-up laid bare the dangers to patients of an "overwhelmed' system and staff.

An unnamed man who was due to receive only nursing and medication for head swelling was wheeled into the operating theatre on February 19 and underwent a brain surgery meant for someone else.

Doctors in Kenya didn't exactly use their noggins when they performed a brain surgery on the wrong man, according to a report Friday.

They included the neurosurgeon, the ward nurse, theatre receiving nurse, and the anaesthetist.

"We are happy to inform the public that the patient is in recovery and progressing well", Ms Koros added.

The doctors colleagues have however protested the suspensions, saying that the person who put on the identification tags is the one who is responsible for such a horror.

The directive took effect immediately pending investigations into the mistaken surgery conducted on a patient two weeks ago.

The patients were received and both admitted in the hospital's Ward 5A, which houses general surgery and trauma patients without fractures. People have now been inquisitive about the commitment of the medical staff at the hospital and about pre-surgery procedures in Kenyan hospitals, especially on how to ensure the right patient is operated on the right place.

"Besides, the file details and patient label tallied".

After consulting a senior neurosurgeon on call, the operating doctor was instructed to proceed no further, clean up the area and close the head.

Both patients were reportedly in good condition following the mix-up.

According to doctors who recounted events leading up to the surgery, the patient was confused and not able to communicate properly.
