Myhrer wins Olympic slalom at 35 as favourites ski out

Marcel Hirscher

"It's fantastic to be on the podium with two such unbelievable skiers and I knew I will have to show the slalom of my life yet to have a chance to get that medal and to get that gold medal", said Gisin, whose sister Dominique Gisin won downhill gold at the Sochi Olympics four years ago. It's the first time Hircher has not finished a race in two years.

"The feeling was really bad the whole week on slalom skis and this is the final result", he admitted.

The two medals take Switzerland's tally to six in Alpine skiing at these Games, their most in a single Winter Games since 1988, when they won 11.

"I came into these Olympics knowing I could be a medal threat in multiple disciplines".

"I had a really good first run", he said.

David Wise delivered another gold for the USA, winning the men's halfpipe in freestyle skiing.

Swiss skier Ramon Zenhaeusern was placed second, 0.34 seconds behind Myhrer.

Sixteen-year-old New Zealander Nico Porteous claimed the bronze medal with a score of 94.80.

Hirscher and Kristoffersen seemed yet untouchable, especially the first, already sacred in South Korea in combined and in giant slalom.

That left Myhrer at the top of the podium.

Dominique Gisin celebrated downhill gold in Sochi four years ago and she was an ardent supporter as sister Michelle beat a competitive field including Mikaela Shiffrin to win the women's alpine combined.

Several members of the Canadian team wept on the ice while accepting the silver medals, and defenseman Jocelyne Larocque immediately removed hers from around her neck and held it in her left hand.

Belarus won the gold in the women's 4×6-kilometer biathlon relay, finishing in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 3.4 seconds. This is what also can happen and is part of the game, part of the sport.

Hanna Oeberg stormed back from nearly a minute down to take silver for Sweden, 10.7 seconds behind Domracheva, and Anais Bescond claimed bronze for France.

"To be named alongside him is a great honour for me".

"It was big celebration, big happiness, he was surprised and felt the same as we did", she told reporters.

"She made me believe that you can grab the stars and that's what I did today".

Kristoffersen, who won silver in the giant slalom in Pyeongchang, refused to blame his vomiting at the start.

Everything stayed on, and he skied to victory.

Gasser, who finished 15th in the slopestyle event last week, put down a 96.00 with the final run of the day to snatch gold away from American Jamie Anderson.

The Austrian did a "cab double 10" - two flips and three full rotations - to slip past Anderson.

Going into the second run without Hirscher's domineering presence, Kristoffersen was hoping to upgrade the bronze he achieved in Sochi to gold at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre.

The gold will go some way to making up for the Austrian's disappointment in the slopestyle, where high winds prevented any of the riders from laying down two clean runs. "This tops everything", Myhrer said after improving on the bronze he won in Vancouver in 2010.

The fastest man after the first run, Norway's Henrik Kristofferson, did not finish, bowing out early on his second run. A 23 year-old for his second Games, Kristoffersen has conceded to his elder Swedish, 35 years old.

Hungary rounded off the short track action by winning the men's 5,000m relay.
