Pelosi stages 8-hour speech on 'Dreamers'

Top Ryan staffer praises Pelosi's endurance after eight-hour speech

One House Democrat, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, called Pelosi's presentation "absolutely off message" and "political malpractice" and said several members were furious with the direction she took.

This came a day after Pelosi spoke on the House floor for a record eight hours to demand a vote on DACA, a move that garnered mixed reaction from Democrats and had Republican campaign operatives planning to use the minority leader as a weight to handicap their opponents in the midterm elections.

The California Democrat took to the House floor at about 10:04 a.m. The Californian concluded her speech at 6:11pm to applause and a standing ovation from the Democrats.

Wearing four-inch heels and forgoing any breaks, Pelosi, 77, spent much of the rare talkathon Wednesday reading personal letters from the young immigrants whose temporary protection from deportation is set to expire next month.

The performance had no immediate impact on Republican leaders, who have not agreed to a vote. There are some people that - some Democrats who say that they really believe the biggest driver of leverage now is that Republicans won't want to be held responsible if something doesn't pass.

Flake said Trump "sees a political downside of not fixing" DACA.

He's calling on members of both parties to "support our troops and support this Bill!" "It won't pass in the House".

Most Senate Democrats are backing it, leaving the House Democrats who aren't as the primary objectors, aside from conservative Republicans who were never expected to get behind the deal. The deal was also praised by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

The Senate agreement on a two-year, almost $400 billion budget deal would provide Pentagon and domestic programs with huge spending increases. Nondefense programs would receive about $60 billion over current levels.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is celebrating a new a budget agreement as providing needed funding for health, drug abuse and social service programs. But when it comes to immigration there are only two things of note: It does nothing at all to protect the Dreamers, and it simultaneously removes the last shred of leverage Democrats had in the immigration debate this year. The shutdown was the second partial government shutdown in three weeks. He called it "the best thing we've done" for the middle class and the economy. Her stand threatened to upend the budget deal by saying she would vote no.

Mr Ryan has indicated that he is not open to a House debate on immigration and that he will only push a bill that Mr Trump supports.

Instead, the Kentucky Republican says the initial measure before lawmakers will be a bill that doesn't address the politically charged subject. In the House, the margin was narrower, 240-186, with the bill passing at 5:30 and moving on to President Trump's desk for his signature.

It also would increase the government's debt cap, preventing a first-ever default on US obligations that looms in just a few weeks.

Waters said, "We've had the opportunity to yield time to Leader Pelosi, and while she certainly came in to oppose this bill that we have before us, having yielded one minute to the leader is the most profound one minute probably in the history of this institution". Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), had cut the Dreamers loose by severing the immigration issue from negotiations over a two-year budget deal to prevent another government shutdown.

If Ryan's assertion, backed by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, that the majority of Republicans will vote for the bill is true, he has no reason not to put the bill on the floor.

"I think we have to be realistic", said Arizona's Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego.

Meadows told MSNBC Wednesday that a bipartisan deal will draw "120 or 140 Democrats and maybe about the same on Republicans sending this to the president's desk".

Congress is on the verge of a long-term budget pact that would provide whopping spending increases to the Pentagon and domestic federal programs, overdue disaster relief money and, perhaps, legislation to increase the government's borrowing limit.

The House passed a short-term spending bill Tuesday night aimed at keeping the government open.

KELLY:.When it comes to immigration. AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Ryan "has already repeatedly stated we intend to do a DACA and immigration reform bill - one that the president supports".
