Oops! Hawaii Officials Accidently Send Warning Of Incoming Ballistic Missile

The White House said President Donald Trump, at his private club in Florida, was briefed on the false alert.

The US military is in charge of detecting ballistic missile launches and maintains a complex and integrated network of sensors and detection capabilities in the Pacific to follow missile activity, a network that has been improved in recent years. The so-called early warning satellites are created to identify within seconds the location of the launch site, the missile's trajectory and its potential target.

"I woke up and saw a missile warning and thought 'no way.' I thought 'No, this is not happening today, '" Malapit said. NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command), STRATCOM, intelligence agencies and the National Security Council are involved in the decision-making.

The incident comes as tension remains high between the United States and North Korea. "There's nothing to prep for a missile coming in", she said. Hawaii's emergency management system relies on the military because it does not have detection capability on its own.

"I could see fighter jets and warships, and I thought this might be the most risky place to be in the event of an emergency or conflict", Wada said.

But for the more than 30 minutes it took before a corrected message was broadcast, the alert caused panic around the state.

A second alert was sent that read: "There is no missile threat or danger to the State of Hawaii". Wireless emergency alerts are usually dispatched during critical emergency situations and are a partnership between the Federal Communications Commission, FEMA and the wireless industry.

In December, Hawaii began monthly testing of a nuclear warning siren system that would be used in case of an impending nuclear missile strike. That system delivers sound and text warnings to mobile phones, according to the agency.

Hawaii's false ballistic missile alert was the latest reminder of the nuclear threat that North Korea poses to the US amid the rising tensions and war of words between the two nation's leaders. "Repeat. False Alarm", it said.

"It was a mistake made during a standard procedure at the changeover of a shift and an employee pushed the wrong button", Ige said.

"I was in a taxi when the warning came, and, to be honest, I was pretty calm since in Japan, I've had plenty of experiences with alarms going off", Shiomi said.

The emergency alert, which was sent to cellphones statewide just before 8:10 a.m., said: "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII".

Hotel guests across the Hawaiian islands were told to hide in basements. The state would have about a 20-minute heads-up before a potential missile launch from Kim Jong Un's regime hit the islands.

While the agency tweeted that there was no threat about 10 minutes after the warning, it was not officially rescinded for almost 40 minutes, when a revised alert confirming the "false alarm" reached cellphones. Residents are instead instructed to go inside and remain sheltered for up to 14 days or until they are told it's safe to leave. There's a checklist the agency goes through to make sure the alert from U.S. Pacific Command is accurate. What shelter is going to protect me & my family from a nuclear bomb? Officials would then use AM-FM broadcast radios to provide information, the agency said.

"You can only imagine what kicked in", Gabbard told CNN.

Hawaiians rushed to areas with some physical protection.

On the H-3, a major highway north of Honolulu, vehicles sat empty after drivers left them to run to a nearby tunnel after the alert showed up, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
