Meeting Trump would be a "bitter pill" to swallow: Imran Khan

'Betrayed' Pakistan army chief won't ask for further US aid

However, the U.S. on Tuesday made its stand clear that the aid to Pakistan has only been suspended not cut-off, as it wanted the country to take an aggressive approach in eliminating terrorism.

Pakistan has apprised the United States about its serious concerns which need to be addressed for moving forward, according to Radio Pakistan.

He said that Pakistan is facing serious problems from the elements carrying out attacking from Afghanistan's soil.

Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party rules Pakistan's Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KPK) province, which borders Afghanistan, as part of a coalition government that includes the religious Jamaat-e-Islami party.

"I will dread it, but I will have to swallow the bitter pill and meet him", said Imran, adding, "Whether we would be able to communicate, I am not so sure, but of course we, countries, have to work with the United States".

Many Pakistanis were insulted after Trump on New Year's Day in a Twitter posting accused Islamabad of taking $33 billion in aid over the past 15 years while offering back "nothing but lies & deceit". He insisted Pakistan should have supported the USA campaign against terrorism but it should not have deployed tens of thousands of troops to the country's tribal regions on the Afghan border to fight its own people.

Army Chief, General Qamar Bajwa has said that Pakistan wouldn't ask for restoration of the financial assistance suspended by the United States and will continue its whole-hearted efforts against militancy and terrorism even without U.S. financial support in accordance with our own national interest.

US officials say Pakistan has provided a safe haven for insurgents operating across the border in Afghanistan, often attacking government, civilian, and religious sites, along with USA coaltion forces.

On Friday, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa told US Central Command Chief General Joseph Votel during a telephone call that Pakistan "felt betrayed" by criticism over its efforts in the war on terror. US officials allege the lawlessness in the Pakistan border region is to be blamed for the Taliban resurgence, a charge that Pakistani officials deny. While he praises liberals outside Pakistan as anti-war and committed to humanitarian values and freedom of speech, he rails against Pakistani liberals, chastising them for supporting the military operations in the tribal regions. Sharif's brother, Shahbaz, is also a potential candidate for the prime minister job.
