Israel restores power to Gaza after Palestinians promise to pay the bills

05 de enero de 2018, 11:32United Nations, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) Following US President Donald Trump " s decision on Jerusalem, clashes increased in the Gaza Strip: more than 4,500 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli forces and 14 died. They probably aren't strong enough yet to dislodge Hamas from Gaza.

Israelis consider Jerusalem their eternal capital, but Palestinians have also long aspired to establish the city's eastern sector as the capital of a future Palestinian state, making the city a sensitive subject in potential peace talks.

In the past, Trump has expressed support for the Taylor Force Act, a bill that would see USA aid to the PA slashed if it continued its "pay-for-slay" policy of rewarding terrorists and their families with stipends for the murder of Israelis.

On Tuesday, President Trump threatened to cut off aid donated by the United States government to Palestine. The US is the largest donor to UNRWA and ending its aid could have a particularly damaging effect in Gaza.

Earlier in the week, Trump complained on Twitter that "we pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect".

On Tuesday, Haley warned of a possible cut to US support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which helps Palestinian refugees, unless the Palestinians come back to the negotiating table.

The demonstrators rallying in the Jabaliya refugee camp vented their anger against both the Palestinian Authority of president Mahmud Abbas and the Islamist movement Hamas, which runs Gaza.

"It used to be the State Department spokesman would have carefully crafted statements, but now people are saying, 'What should I believe?"

"Both of these ideas can not be true at the same time", he said of the December remarks that Jerusalem's boundaries are up for negotiation and this month's tweet that Jerusalem is off the table.

Hamas - regarded as a terrorist group by Israel and U.S. - has been trying to mend ties with neighbouring Egypt and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. "What's then to negotiate if you just took Jerusalem off the table?"

"They have betrayed the entirety of Muslims", the narrator says. Palestinian officials and other leaders in the Arab and Muslim worlds have said that the move essentially disqualified the US from brokering peace talks in the region.
