Chelsea Manning Eyes US Senate Seat For Maryland

Chelsea Manning has filed to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland

Former US military whistleblower Chelsea Manning, who served seven years in military prison for leaking classified data, is running for the US Senate in Maryland.

Federal Election Commission documents show Chelsea Elizabeth Manning of North Bethesda, Md., has filed paperwork to run as a Democrat, a move that would pit her against two-term Sen. She is running as a Democrat and refers to Maryland as her "home state" on her website.

Manning was sent to prison after a 2013 espionage conviction for leaking classified documents to Wikileaks. In January 2017, former President Barack Obama commuted her sentence to almost seven years of confinement dating from her arrest on May 27, 2010.

Manning made waves in a different way when she posed in a red one-piece bathing suit for Vogue's September issue, eliciting both supportive and critical comments.

Born Bradley Manning, Chelsea came out as transgendered shortly after being sentenced.

Last year, Manning, who said she leaked the documents to spark a debate about United States military and foreign policy, was offered a spot as a visiting fellow at Harvard University.

Todd Eberly, a political science professor at St. Mary's College, said President Donald Trump's unexpected rise to chief executive opened the door for political neophytes such as Manning.

However, if Manning were to succeed, she'd the be the first openly transgender elected to both Congress and the U.S. Senate.

In addition to Manning, Cardin so far faces a Democratic primary challenge June 26 from political unknowns Richard "Rikki" Vaughn and Jerome Segal. She said she might release a statement in the coming days. US officials said the material placed the lives of USA soldiers and Afghan informants at risk, but Manning said she had a duty to inform the public about how the USA was conducting its wars.

Her case remains politically divisive. There have been mixed reactions to Manning's whistleblowing, and while a number of people view her as a 21st century Tiananmen Square Tank Man, to others she remains a traitor.

During her incarceration Manning battled for, and won, the right to start hormone treatment. Cardin in this year's election.
