Cameron Jordan Trolls Cam Newton, Sends Him Wine After Playoff Win

Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor had a tough game against the Jacksonville Jaguars defence

"He is still Drew Brees".

Jordan, an animated personality who has never shied away from the occasional bulletin-board material, also referred to Panthers offensive tackle Matt Kalil as "Speedbump McGee" after finishing Sunday's game with a sack, an assist on another sack and two batted passes.

Newton guided the Panthers into Saints territory but two throws into the end zone fell incomplete and he was sacked on fourth down to end Carolina's hopes.

But if Brees was offended by the slight, he wasn't about to show it. Jordan said. "Look, he like spun". "We trust each other. Not that he wears high heels - I don't think so yet, right?" But he dismissed that with what amounted to a shrug, saying: "That happens every now and then".

Even a few days from his 39th birthday, Brees still checks all the boxes as a quarterback, capable of making pinpoint throws under pressure, dropping dimes on deep passes, and even making throws like this on the move. There are more days behind him than ahead of him in his National Football League career. Unfortunately for the quarterback, it will be in a wine glass and not on the football field.

ROAD WOES: While the Saints won their sixth straight home playoff game and improved to 5-0 in the Superdome in postseason games under coach Sean Payton, they've won only one road playoff game in their history. Cam Newton is 12/20 for 143 yards, but the team has just 47 yards rushing on 18 carries.

As a fan I always find the most emotionally exhausting New Orleans Saints games not the ones where the game is wild and seesaws back and forth all day but rather the ones where at a certain moment I've mentally relaxed and a Saints victory seems assured and then things start to go wrong - oh so very wrong. If the Saints are going to accomplish their ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl this season, that much-improved supporting cast might not be enough.

"I've just got to be better", Newton said. I thought the quarterback was out of the pocket. "That, to me, is a sign that you have a program".

"I've been telling you all year that you don't sleep on Drew", New Orleans running back Mark Ingram said after the game.

"That was huge", Brees said.

"It was awesome", he said.

"It was awesome. All those guys were former teammates of mine". The irony is that the fastest player on last year's team was playing for the Saints. The Panthers wanted to win a playoff game. They have their lives.

And, to a large extent, those storylines, as far as they went, were spun rightfully so.

And yet, there they were on Sunday, still sending No. 22 into the line between the tackles in a series of wasted and meaningless plays that only took time off the clock and took the ball out of the hands of the only player on the team capable of moving the offense.

In a subsequent tweet, the team added: "Cam Newton is back in at quarterback". That's the way it was [Saturday] seeing all those guys.

The feel-good vibe of the weekend almost was broken.

"I just have to be better", he said. "I said, 'Let's go for it.' So, end of discussion".

Panther nation will bemoan and wonder what would have been if not for an intentional grounding call on Newton that took cost Carolina precious yards and seconds in the final minute, but not Newton. "We came here to win, and that's what we didn't do". They lost at Minnesota, 29-19, in their season opener. So that feels like ages and ages ago. It's an extremely tough place to play.
