"Our current advice to customers is not to travel to Nottingham station this morning". "Whilst the station remains closed, no trains will be able to run to or from the station".

The Grade II listed station was built in the mid-19th century and refurbished in recent years.

Dr Remigius Ilione, 49, said: "I drove into the auto park and I could already hear the fire alarm".

Road closures were also in place at Queen's Road, Station Street and Carrington Street, police said and buses and trams were also affected.

Alex Hayman of Which? said: "Frustrated passengers who face yet more disruption to their services will be disappointed to find that their rights to compensation as a result of a strike are surprisingly complicated".

EMT also Tweeted to say: "We're working with emergency services to open access to the station auto park at Nottingham; unfortunately it isn't safe to access at the moment so remains closed".

"That is because the fire is burning continuously through voids, which puts it out of sight and makes it incredibly hard for us to locate".
