Zuckerberg's 2018 personal challenge involves FB fixes and cryptocurrency

The effort will mark Zuckerberg's personal challenge for 2018 to learn something new.

The tech giant came under fire when it was revealed that Russian Federation used Facebook to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election through targeted advertising. Its ad-targeting capabilities were also allowing companies to find potential customers using racially discriminatory and derogatory terms. While in past years, that neutrality has enabled Facebook to grow at great speed without assuming responsibility for how individuals or governments used its tools, the political tumult of recent years has made such a stance increasingly untenable. Facebook capped the year addressing early investor and employee concerns that it was "destroying how society works". If Zuckerberg truly intends to spend a year trying to figure out how the blockchain can solve intractable geopolitical problems, he would be better off just doing Whole30.

You might be thinking: Well isn't fixing a company's issues already the job of the CEO? His firm does crisis management for major technology companies. Zuckerberg, however, has warned people about the huge risks associated with the technology. "If you have a report coming out that says Facebook was a big purveyor of this fake news, you need to fix this thing".

Posting on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg pointed to a number of issues he feels must be rectified on the platform, and set himself the task of remedying them by year's end. Technology was expected to give people more control over their lives, he wrote. He pointed to the centralization of power among larger technology companies that dominate markets, as well as the surveillance government imposes upon its citizens.

"There are important counter-trends to this - like encryption and cryptocurrency - that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people's hands.I'm interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services."

Congress came down hard on Facebook, Twitter and Google past year over their role in the 2016 election.

Facebook, like other tech giants, has long maintained that it is essentially politically neutral - the company has "community standards" but no clearly articulated political orientation.

"It's PR 101. He doesn't have to do an interview". "It was a serious year, and I wore a tie every day as a reminder", Mr.

Last year, he visited every USA state in a mission widely interpreted as indicating his hidden ambition to be President. At the time, the US economy was in the midst of recession and Facebook, then five years old, wasn't profitable.
