Delhi fog: Operations at airport suspended as visibility drops below 50m

Delhi wakes up to foggy Saturday morning 13 trains cancelled

As many as 20 flights got delayed while six were cancelled at the Indira Gandhi International airport in the national capital because of intense fog.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.2 degree Celsius; the maximum temperature was recorded at 22.6 degree Celsius. This year's worst condition of fog has been experienced.

Not only this, dense fog has engulfed the entire northwestern plains.

Several domestic as well as worldwide flights were affected as fog reduced visibility. The visibility later improved to 100 metres at 3 a.m. and to 200 metres at 6 a.m. The three-hour suspension of flight operations meant that it took hours for the backlog to clear. The landings can take place with a visibility of 50 metres, however, for take-off, a minimum visibility of 125 metres is required.

Arrivals at the airport were also baldy hit as only some aircraft were allowed to land.

The Northern Railways said over 50 trains coming to Delhi were running late and 20 were rescheduled.

The Met Department said the shallow fog would continue throughout the region all through the day.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius. SAFAR, which has its own monitoring network, recorded "severe" levels of pollution.

"Dense fog at @Delhi_Airport today #CATIIIB Glad we could land @airindiain AI142 Before time", tweeted Air India pilot Nivedita Bhasin at 10:41 am.

Many took to Twitter to share pictures of the overcrowded domestic terminal where passengers could be seen sitting on floors and staircases.
