Report Claims North Korea Preparing Anthrax Warheads

It was reported Kim Jong-un's regime was testing an anthrax tipped warhead

Japan's Asahi newspaper, citing an unnamed Japanese intelligence source with ties to South Korean intelligence, says that North Korea is experimenting with the biological weapon anthrax to determine if the spores can survive the heat and pressure of reentry aboard a missile warhead.

KCNA called the U.S. claims "groundless" and said it was just an excuse for harsher sanctions after President Donald Trump labelled North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. The report comes as the Trump Administration - in its new U.S. National Security Strategy - stated that North Korea funnels hundreds of millions of dollars into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that could threaten the United States.

The report cited by Bloomberg News says the North is testing the biological agent to see if it can survive the enormous temperatures the missiles generate.

The North Korean regime has started tests with a view to loading intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with anthrax, according to regional media reports.

It was the highest-profile cyberattack North Korea has been blamed for since the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures after it produced "The Interview", a satirical movie imagining a Central Intelligence Agency plot to kill leader Kim Jong Un.

The country has been capable of producing biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox for decades after orders from North Korea's first leader Kim Il Sung in the 1960s. Pyongyang has long described the joint exercises on land, air and sea as nothing more than preparations for war. The marriage of biological weapons with long range missiles at first glance sounds like nightmare fuel, but sounds weird given the country's emphasis on nuclear weapons.

The North Korean ICBM test that attracted the most attention in November was dubbed Hwasong 15 ("Mars"), and the missile flew as high as 2,800 miles and traveled for 50 minutes, according to ABC News.

The DPRK is the abbreviation for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The report, based off of a source in South Korea, said that it did not have confirmation about whether the tests had been successful.

It recollected when U.S. troops openly used biological weapons during the Korean War and inflicted needless suffering on innocent civilians.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is seeking to soothe relations with Pyongyang and with China, the North's lone major ally, before the Olympics begin in South Korea in February.

The South Korean intelligence source assessed the North Koreans are looking at developing biological weapons as they do not yet have the ability to hit all of the United States mainland with nuclear weapons.
