A New Kind Of Secure! Facebook Unveils Facial Recognition

Facebook Facial Recognition Wants to Manage Your Identity

The new features were being rolled out on Facebook everywhere except Canada and the European Union, where face-recognition technology is not employed, according to Candela.

Tech companies are putting in place a variety of functions using facial recognition technology, despite fears about how the facial data could be used.

The new Facebook facial recognition feature is created to detect when users appear in other people's photos, even if they're not tagged, and notify them so they can manage the situation.

Facebook already offers a related form of notification for those tagged in other people's photos.

For the low, low cost of free - insofar as "free" constitutes permission to access, store, and use your face - Facebook will add another layer of convenience to the largest data harvesting experiment in history.

The new facial recognition tech can be turned on from the account's settings. "We thought it was important to have a really straightforward way of controlling facial recognition technology", he said.

The most recently announced features begin their official appearance on Tuesday.

Facebook: Who needs millennials?

Sherman says regulators at the time took action against specific abuses, like prohibiting stalking and allowing privacy invasion lawsuits, rather than requiring a blanket license for photography.

To Facebook's credit, the company plans to implement a meaningful level of control: It has implemented a global on/off switch to avoid facial recognition entirely.

Facebook said it also plans to use facial recognition technology to notify users if someone else uploads a photo of them as their profile picture, which the company said may help reduce impersonations, as well as in software that describes photos in words for people who have vision loss, so that they can tell who is in a photo. "The template is the reference we use to recognize you in photos". We're doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook.

Facebook declined to comment beyond pointing to its law enforcement guidelines and Government Requests Report.
