TV show host Suhaib Ilyasi gets lifer for wife's murder

Former TV-producer Suhaib Ilyasi convicted in wife's death-case

Former TV producer and anchor Suhaib Ilyasi has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife Anju. Suhaib had been convicted of murdering his wife, who had suffered multiple stab wounds from a pair scissors. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on him, and directed him to pay her parents Rs 10 lakh as compensation.

The court also ruled that at this stage, Ilyasi could not take the benefit of his daughter's non-examination, since he had not presented his daughter in front of the authorities to get her statement recorded at the time of the murder, the Press Trust of India reported.

As Ilyasi prepares to face a life term in jail, the fate of his projects is unclear, but the verdict has closed curtains on a 17-year-long story.

While Rashmi's lawyer has been quoted as saying that Suhaib killed Anju as she was aware of his "illegal acts and financial misdeeds" and wanted to move to Canada with her child, after the verdict on December 20, Ilyasi broke down and said he was innocent and this was "injustice".

"Accordingly, accused is held guilty for committing murder of his wife Anju Ilyasi and convicted under section 302 of the IPC", the court said.

Three months after Anju's murder, her mother and sister told a Sub Divisional Magistrate that Anju had been driven to suicide by Ilyasi, after which he was arrested on charges of dowry harassment. The HC had then stayed the trial court proceedings in the case. He had approached the Supreme Court challenging the HC ruling but the Apex court dismissed his plea.

Additional Sessions Judge S K Malhotra pronounced the quantum of sentence in the case. While convicting him of murder, the court noted that when Anju was "seriously injured" and in a "critical condition" on the day of the incident, Ilyasi had misled the doctor by providing false information suggesting suicide. Sharma also told the court that even though Ilyasi claimed to snatch the knife away from Anju, neither his nor Anju's fingerprints were found on the knife.
