Trump's FCC kills net neutrality, opening internet 'fast lanes' to ISPs

"Today the FCC voted along party lines to repeal net neutrality".

In a move that will literally fuck everyone over, the Federal Communications Commission just voted to repeal net neutrality rules.

He added that it "certainly wasn't heavy-handed government regulation" that has been responsible for the internet's "phenomenal" development.

"It's basic economics", Mr. Pai said in a speech at the Newseum in April. In general, telecommunications companies were the winners, while consumers and Internet companies lost out.

Simultaneously, a separate proposal to create a new net neutrality law could happen.

He and 17 other Democratic attorneys general, including Pennsylvania's Josh Shapiro, have said the FCC public record leading to the new rules appeared to be laced with fake comments and stolen email addresses.

The problem is that many Americans don't have access to multiple providers. The FCC has acknowledged irregularities with the public comments but says they did not influence the agency's decision. Today's decision removes this classification, undoing the legal backing that gave net neutrality its legitimacy.

All that being said, the FCC is essentially a partisan body because the President appoints members (though they require Senate confirmation).

The "agency that is supposed to protect you is abandoning you", she said.

The FCC's vote concludes a tumultuous eight-month passage since Pai, proposed gutting the earlier rules. "Consumers don't have a great level of trust in the ISPs".

The senator argued over and over - including in an opinion piece in Phoenix New Times - that the measure would not reduce existing privacy protections.

Fellow Commissioner Michael O'Rielly said he did not believe that Comcast or others would risk the "PR nightmare" of blocking websites or otherwise interfering with internet traffic. "It's nearly as if the special interests pushing Title II weren't trying to solve a real problem but instead looking for an excuse to achieve their longstanding goal of forcing the internet under the federal government's control".

A moment of silence for net neutrality. "These fundamental tenets of net neutrality are also key components of our core network and business practices - they govern how we run our internet business", Comcast said.

NY attorney general Eric Schneiderman has announced he will lead a multi-state lawsuit against the vote that "gave big telecom an early Christmas present" and "will give ISPs (Internet Service Providers) new ways to control what we see, what we do, and what we say online". "Consumers will remain protected". "We don't slow down, block, or discriminate against lawful content", read a statement from Charter Communications, which serves about 22.3 million USA broadband homes.

"We are a small ecommerce company that competes, and in some cases, sells goods similar to far larger players", said Lee Meyer, CEO of interior design site, which is based in Denver.

I expect that consumers will either see a decline in available services or an increase in costs, and content providers and online services will have to enter into expensive agreements with ISPs.

ACLU senior policy analyst Jay Stanley wrote that the relatively new Congressional Review Act allows Congress to "reverse regulatory actions within 60 legislative days of their enactment".

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said in a statement that, "Without [net neutrality], we might not be here today, and our streamers might not be here tomorrow..." In fact, if someone said "Hey, let's get rid of that rule about not bringing bears into hospitals so we can restore the wonderful, competitive environment we had before", I would wonder, "What exactly are you PLANNING that you need us to get rid of this relatively basic protection?"
