Russian Federation suspends diplomatic presence in Yemen over security situation

Saudi-led raid on police camp in Sanaa leaves at least 39 Yemenis dead – report

Russian Federation removed all of its diplomatic personnel from Yemen and has temporarily shut its embassy there, the country's Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Shehhi further said that Yemeni citizens from liberated areas have welcomed the Arab Coalition Forces, reflecting their desire to liberate their country from the Iran-backed Houthi militias.

Russian Federation says it has temporarily shut its embassy in Yemen and evacuated all of its diplomats. Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Dedushkin and his staff will temporarily perform their duties in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The blockade was created to cut off the alleged supply of weapons to Houthi rebels from Iran but has exacerbated what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

It quoted an official source in the Saudi-led coalition as saying it had received a request for permission for a Russian plane to evacuate the personnel, and that the plane had left Sanaa airport.

The one-time alliance of Houthi rebels and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh broke down last week when the Houthis killed Saleh at his home.

The stalemated war has killed 10,000 people, displaced 3 million and pushed the country to the brink of starvation.

On Sunday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a renewed push to end the "stupid war" in Yemen, saying he hoped the Trump administration could pressure Saudi Arabia to ease the humanitarian crisis there.

Millions of Yemenis are struggling with hunger and disease, including the worst cholera epidemic on record, which has infected about one million people. In his words, "millions of people, including the 8.4 million Yemen who are on the brink of survival, depend on the ability of humanitarian workers to continue their work and provide them with the necessary medical care, clean water, food and shelter".

Although the KSA officially reopened the ports in late November, the KSA-led Coalition has only cleared a limited number of commercial and humanitarian shipments to enter Yemen's Red Sea ports.
