Scientists: Eating cheese reduces the risk of developing heart disease

Eating Cheese Every Day May Actually Be Good for You

Those who got the most benefit were eating about a matchbook sized serving of cheese a day.

Researchers from China and the Netherlands analyzed data gathered from 15 previous studies where numerous participants were tracked for at least 10 years.

Study co-author Li-Qiang Qin - who works in the Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene at Soochow University's School of Public Health in China - and colleagues report their in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Well, sort of. The study explains that, as with anything, moderation is key.

While cheese is a source of saturated fat, the researchers state that it "also has potentially beneficial nutrients", such as calcium, which helps limit how much saturated fat the body absorbs. The research relies mostly on self-reported data, which can be unreliable, and only shows a correlation - not a direct cause-and-effect. Some cheeses can be quite high and our total daily intake should be less than 1500 mg. They found that overall, people who ate more cheese had a 14% less chance of developing heart disease and were 10% less at risk of having a stroke, compared to those who did not eat cheese at all. While it may seem like a lot of the dairy product, it's an average of 36 grams per day, which is slightly less than the amount recommended by researchers. Also relevant is the fact that different types of cheese weren't studied, meaning that some may be better or worse for you in terms of reducing risk of heart disease and stroke.

But don't stock up on the Cheddar just yet; both studies have their own limitations.

The relationship, however, was U-shaped rather than linear-meaning that higher quantities of cheese were not necessarily better.

However, it is hard to conclude whether these associations had any influence on the study results.

Overconsumption, however, can trigger high cholesterol and increase risk of heart disease due to high levels of saturated fat.
