28 years after Montreal, women still face violence

Polytechnique presents scholarship in honour of Montreal massacre victims

Bouquets of red, pink and white roses were laid outside Ecole polytechnique on Wednesday at the foot of a plaque bearing the names of the 14 women who were killed there 28 years ago.

"It's also to honour ... the women who are murdered across our country", Brown said.

"I don't think I'm being naïve by saying I think there's potential for significant change here", says Senior, the president and executive director of the Canadian Women's Foundation.

To create change, it is essential to recognize that the issue of violence against women knows no frontiers. The date also falls within the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign which begins on November 25 with the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until December 10 with Human Rights Day. Each woman's name was read out. A victim, her mother says, of someone with a violent past who targeted women.

"I think it's an award that stems from a awful tragedy, and I think this is an excellent way to try to turn that around years later and make something positive of the fact that women are now recognized as making important contributions in engineering", she said.

The speakers reflect on the horrors of that day, but also talk about the challenge many still face in a society where gender equality is still far from won.

On December 6, 1989, one man opened fire and killed 14 young women just because they were women in what has come to be known in Canada as the "Montreal Massacre".

To those who are still vulnerable, such as members of the LGBTQ2 community, Indigenous women, newcomers and disabled women, we will not tolerate discrimination and violence.

Specifically, in 2015, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), of which the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is an affiliate, partnered with the University of Western Ontario to conduct the first-ever Canadian survey on domestic violence in the workplace. It not only led to stricter gun control laws in the country, but it sparked national discussion on how to address gender-based violence.

"Most women are able to survive the violence against them but every six days one woman in Canada is murdered by a man who said he loved her", Brown said.
