YouTube To Deploy Reviewers To Filter Extremist, Disturbing Videos

Google to hire thousands of You Tube moderators as criticism over content mounts

And because advertisers are querying the tech giant's approach to moderation and threatening to blow down the house of cards Google has built out of blank cheques from multinationals, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has had to step in to claim everything's fine, saying: "Human reviewers remain essential to both removing content and training machine learning systems because human judgement is critical to making contextualised decisions on content".

"I've seen how some bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm", she wrote in a blog post.

Apart from expanding the current strength, the company plans to take punitive measures about inappropriate comments by introducing new comment management tools and blocking mechanisms.

Google, which owns YouTube, announced on Monday that next year it would expand its total workforce to more than 10,000 people responsible for reviewing content that could violate its policies.

In November, confectionary maker Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ), Lidl, Mars and other consumer goods producers joined the boycott after The Times newspaper found YouTube was showing clips of scantily clad children in conjunction with the ads major brands.

The video streaming company built an automated software to determine videos with extremist content.

Google is going on a hiring spree to try to stamp out offensive videos and comments on YouTube.

"Our advances in machine learning let us now take down almost 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours and we continue to accelerate that speed", Wojcicki said.

Rounding out the changes, YouTube will increase how it protects advertisers and creators from inappropriate content by applying stricter criteria, conducting more manual curation, and significantly ramping up its team of ad reviewers to ensure ads only run where they should.

"We've heard loud and clear from creators that we have to be more accurate when it comes to reviewing content, so we don't demonetise videos by mistake".

The company isn't just banking on more human intervention, however.

Wojcicki said 180,000 people would have had to work 40 weeks to assess the same amount of content.

YouTube says its machine-learning algorithms help take down 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload.
