Rep. John Conyers won't seek re-election

The albatross that Democrats deserve

Conyers, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, will announce on Tuesday he does not plan to run for re-election, USA media said following accusations of sexual harassment against the Michigan Democrat.

John Conyers returned to Detroit from Washington last week and was hospitalized on Wednesday after complaining that he felt light-headed.

'The allegations against congressman Conyers as we have learned more since Sunday are serious, disappointing and very credible, ' said Pelosi, a California representative who notably did not call for Conyers to go during a Sunday appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press'.

The 88-year-old Conyers also submitted his decision to retire in a one-sentence letter Tuesday to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

As allegations of sexual misconduct continue to swirl around him, several of Conyers' congressional colleagues encouraged him to resign.

After distancing itself from the candidate, the Republican National Committee followed suit, announcing it is helping fund Moore's campaign for next Tuesday's special election.

Conyers was first elected in 1964 and is a founding member of the CBC.

Firmly ensconced in his House seat, Conyers remained a reliable left-wing vote. "He is going to retire, ' Conyers" great-nephew Ian, a MI state senator, told the New York Times, adding that he planned to run for the seat in Congress himself, suggesting Conyers would step down at the end of his term and won't seek reelection.

He acknowledged the settlement but denied any wrongdoing. Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal claim in 2015 with a former employee who said he fired her because she said no to his sexual advances.

Elisa Grubbs made the allegation in an affidavit released by her attorney, Lisa Bloom. Such behavior "was a regular part of life while working in the office of Rep. Conyers", she said.

Conyers called the events leading to his early retirement "a game of politics", but said he and his family are taking what has happened in stride and they are dealing with it and will keep moving forward.

Grubbs witnessed assault on other women.

He also hired civil rights heroine Rosa Parks to serve on his congressional staff in his Detroit office. Six years later, he became the top Democrat on Judiciary. He has already stepped aside from his position as ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

After a 15-year struggle, Conyers succeeded in establishing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a federal holiday in 1986. "I think we have to recognize and be able to hold the dueling possibilities that somebody can be a great man and have done great things for our country and for civil rights but also have done bad things that require accountability".

"I think that we lose our moral authority if we also don't call out those we love who have done things that are bad", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash. "My client Marion Brown asks only for an acknowledgment and apology".
