4th person killed in Tampa area in possible shooting spree

Tampa Police are investigating a suspicious death in the Tampa neighborhood of Seminole Heights

Police and federal agents with rifles checked vehicle trunks, banged on doors and gathered forensic evidence in a Tampa neighborhood Tuesday as they hunted for the killer believed responsible for gunning down four people for no apparent reason in just over a month.

Police believe the four killings, none of which involved a robbery or other obvious motive, may be related.

"We are treating it as though it is related until we rule otherwise", interim Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said during a news conference Tuesday.

"It's very unfortunate here that we've had another one", Dugan said.

The man is dead and police are calling the incident suspicious.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told officers at a briefing last month to hunt the suspect down and "bring his head to me".

"We think by their proximity and the manner it was done, they are linked", said Dugan during a news conference on Tuesday morning.

Officers are continuing to gather information and are searching the neighborhood as the investigation continues. They said they are looking for a thin black man, about 6-feet tall, wearing black clothing and carrying a large handgun. "I believe this person lives in this neighborhood", said Dugan.

One Seminole Heights school, Edison elementary, is under a "lock-in" meaning children can be dropped off and will stay there safe until further notice.

Nebraska Avenue was shut down between Hillsborough and Osborne avenues for the investigation. Drivers are asked to find another route.

Last week, Seminole Heights residents returned to some normalcy following last month's murders with a "Taste of the Heights" celebration. Then, on October 13, Tampa city workers found the body of Monica Hoffa, 32, in an empty field.

On Oct. 19, victim Anthony Naiboa, 20, was walking north on 15th Street in the area of Wilder Avenue when he was shot and killed.

"A lot of serial killers prefer other methods such as knives or strangulation", she said.

Police asked residents to review any surveillance cameras they might have and share it with investigators. In a security video taken moments after Benjamin Mitchell became the first victim on October 9, the suspect is running from the scene.

Currently, authorities are offering a $41,000 reward for anyone who has information leading to the arrest of a suspect. People can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS.
