United Kingdom parliament to get vote on final Brexit deal

Jeremy Corbyn

The Brexit Secretary said the terms of the UK's exit - including any transition deal and agreement on citizen rights - would have to become law via new legislation. This means that as well as the current "take it or leave it" vote in principle on the Brexit deal, the final agreement will need to be enshrined in law and, importantly, be subject to scrutiny and a vote by MPs and peers.

The amendment requiring parliamentary approval of any deal was supported by 10 Tory rebel MPs, who have forced the government's hand on an issue. Lawmakers from both main parties have been pushing for Parliament to have a greater say in the process, with some tabling amendments to the government's Brexit bill that aim to prevent Britain tumbling out of the trading bloc without a deal.

Tellingly, it comes as the government try to persuade Tory rebels to play ball over the EU Withdrawal Bill which returns to the House tomorrow - and this concession is aimed directly at an amendment to that nature from Dominic Grieve.

Tory backbencher Heidi Allen branded Mr Davis's plan "pointless" as she also highlighted the Government's intention to alter legislation to state Britain's membership of the European Union will formally end at 11pm on 29 March, 2019.

Mr Davis told MPs: "I can now confirm that once we have reached an agreement we will bring forward a specific piece of primary legislation to implement the agreement".

Parliament choosing to reject the deal would not halt Brexit.

And in a separate answer, he added: "It's a meaningful vote, but not meaningful in the sense that some believe meaningful (is), which is that you can reverse the whole thing (Brexit)".

The timing is key here - but the government are unable to guarantee that it wouldn't be the day before Britain leaves as they can't say for sure when the negotiations will end.

"It's a transparent and fairly desperate attempt at the eleventh hour to save face and avoid losing votes in the House".

Members of her own party are willing to vote against the government to stymie a bill which she says is needed to sever ties with the bloc.

"Ministers need to do much better".

Brexit Secretary announces MPs will have the right to vote down any final Brexit deal. They include Dominic Grieve, the Conservative former Attorney General, who previously tabled an amendment to the European Union withdrawal bill demanding a vote.

Labour MP Chuka Umunna, who co-chairs a cross-party parliamentary group of pro-EU MPs, said: "David Davis's announcement just now that there will be an Act of Parliament to approve a final EU deal is totally insufficient".

Earlier, European business leaders warned Theresa May that jobs and investment in the United Kingdom could be lost unless urgent progress is made in the Brexit negotiations with Brussels.
