EA Is Buying Titanfall Developer Respawn For Over $400 Million

EA to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn

Electronic Arts Inc. announced Thursday that it will acquire Respawn Entertainment, a videogame studio known for the "Titanfall" series of games.

According to Kotaku's sources, EA outbid the South Korean publisher Nexon, which now publishes the Titanfall mobile game. There is $151 million in cash, $164 million in restricted long-term stock grants, and up to $140 million in performance-based incentives. It marks the end of Respawn's seven-year run as an independent venture, which began in 2010 when the studio was launched by ousted Infinity Ward heads Vince Zampella and Jason West.

Zampella told VentureBeat that Respawn has "worked together [with EA] a long time from the inception of the studio", and that talk of an acquisition has come up previously. "It doesn't change the future of Titanfall".

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that the Titanfall franchise embodies the publisher's goal of delivering "extraordinary and innovative new experiences", and that "with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more wonderful things in the future". The studio is now at work on a new Titanfall game (a fact that was confirmed today), a third-person Star Wars title, and a VR game. EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we've always had. The details are scarce, so it's not clear if this is Titanfall 3 or a spinoff sort of game. "With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture". "My message is we are still Respawn and we are going to make things better".

Respawn is the creator and developer of the critically-acclaimed Titanfall franchise that energized the first-person shooter genre with its innovative gameplay.
