First openly transgender person of color elected to public office in US

Trans Woman Andrea Jenkins Elected to Minneapolis City Council

Phillipe Cunningham won in Ward 4 in north Minneapolis after a stunning victory over longtime incumbent and City Council president Barb Johnson.

Jenkins was officially elected to the Minneapolis City Council on Tuesday, November 7th. She argued that Marshall had spent too much of his energy in office tackling social issues like the bathroom bill.

She won the same night that Danica Roem became the nation's first openly transgender state lawmaker by winning a Virginia Statehouse seat.

Danica Roem, who took in her win slightly earlier Tuesday evening, won a seat in Virginia, becoming the first openly transgender woman of any race to be elected into state legislature.

Marshall, who referred to himself as Virginia's "chief homophobe," refused to publicly debate Roem. Jenkins's election to the City Council after so many years of serving Minneapolis is a "natural transition", said Cecilia Chung, senior director of strategic projects at the Transgender Law Center.

In her acceptance speech, Jenkins, a Democrat, said, "As an African American trans-identified woman, I know firsthand the feeling of being marginalized, left out, thrown under the bus". She is also poet, prose author, and performance artist whose work has received numerous grants.

Andrea Jenkins has won election to the Minneapolis City Council, making her the first trans person elected to a major city's governing body and one of the first out trans people of color elected to any office in the United States.

"This is about the people of the 13th District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias. where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it", Roem said.

"Across the country right now, we're seeing politicians focusing on divisiveness and anti-equality rhetoric, when voters just want ways to improve their lives", Imse said. "The disparities are present in health care, home ownership, employment, incarceration rates, [and] all of these issues are present on a national level, but really significant in Minneapolis, and I want to be a part of changing that paradigm".

As her bio for the elections on her campaign website notes, Jenkins has an experience of 25 years in public service.

Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president and CEO of Victory Fund, declared: "Tonight was about fighting back - an unprecedented number of brilliant trans candidates asking for the votes of tens of thousands of Americans, and getting them".

"Transgender people have been here forever, and black transgender people have been here forever".

"Having transgender people elected in public office means we'll be able to make policies and direct conversations in ways that can ensure equity and fairness and justice for transgender people", she said.

Tyler Titus is the first openly trans person ever elected in Pennsylvania.
