Sky share price outperforms as Game of Thrones boosts performance

James Murdoch the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his wife Kathryn Hufschmid arrive for a reception to celebrate the wedding between Rupert Murdoch and former supermodel Jerry Hall which took place on Friday in London

As 21st Century Fox continues its pursuit of full control over European pay-TV group Sky, chairman James Murdoch won re-election today despite significant shareholder opposition.

Mr Murdoch won 51% of votes cast by independent shareholders at the annual general meeting - up from 49% past year.

When including Fox's 39% holding in Sky, 78% of shareholders backed his reappointment.

Meanwhile, the takeover of Sky is being held up by a United Kingdom investigation into the proposed deal worth £11.7 billion.

While just under 71% of investors voting did so in favour of the report, some 29% voted against approving the report. The majority of the other resolutions passed with over 90% support.

The results were announced against the backdrop of a bid from Rupert Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox to buy the remaining 61% of Sky it does not already own.

The shareholder, Hugh Lawson, said: "I think the board lacks independence".

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) says it will investigate how 21st Century Fox's proposed takeover of Sky would affect media plurality and broadcasting standards in the UK. "Fox is getting a sweetheart deal out of this and mainly I think it's because of the lack of independence on the board".

Quizzed by Labour MP Paul Farrelly about whether recent allegations about sexual harassment at Fox News had been taken into consideration, Ms White explained that Ofcom had looked in detail at the corporate governance of both companies, both recently and longer ago.

"Are you confident that the CMA won't unearth new Fox scandals which derail the bid?", Alaphia Zoyab from activist group Avaaz asked.

The company also saw a 11% increase in EBITDA to £582m and a 15% increase in established business EBITDA to £606m.

European pay-TV giant Sky, facing a possible takeover by Rupert Murdoch´s 21st Century Fox, announced Thursday a surge in subscribers on keen demand for cult USA series Game of Thrones.

She added: "We did not find a particular concern that would have caused us to believe that Sky News in particular and Sky as a broadcaster, post-transaction, would not be a fit and proper broadcaster". It reported that the first series of home-grown drama Riviera achieved 20 million downloads, becoming its highest ever rated Original commission and Game of Thrones became the most watched series ever on Sky. The company launched new streaming services in Spain and Switzerland in the quarter.
