Obesity In Children And Teens Rose Sharply Worldwide Over Past 4 Decades

Global cost of obesity-related illness to hit $1.2 trillion

If this prevalence rate seems to have levelled off for a few years in the rich countries, it continues to rise in countries with low and middle income. "While average BMI among children and adolescents has recently plateaued in Europe and North America, this is not an excuse for complacency as more than 1 in 5 young people in the US and 1 in 10 in the United Kingdom are obese".

Almost 8 percent of boys and almost 6 percent of girls worldwide were obese in 2016, against less than one percent for both sexes in 1975.

In addition to the 124 million obese children, there are 123 million children who are simply overweight.

The number of obese children and adolescents in world has been multiplied by more than ten since 1975, but those underweight remain even more numerous, according to a study published on Wednesday 11 October, which calls for fight against se "two plagues" of malnutrition. With an indoor ecosystem and very little physical activity, Indian children are at risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and other life-threatening conditions, the report stated.

Healthy nutritious foods are becoming too expensive for poor families and communities, he continued, urging for more availability at home and school of these kind of foods, especially in poor families and communities. In South Asia, approximately 20 per cent of girls and 28 per cent of boys were either moderately or severely underweight, which makes them more vulnerable to infectious diseases, and in the case of teen girls, more likely to have pregnancy complications.

Irish children are the eighth most overweight in Europe, and 58th in the world, according to a new study.

The researchers believe this could reflect an increase in the consumption of energy-dense foods, especially highly processed carbohydrates, which lead to weight gain and poor lifelong health outcomes.

"These data highlight, remind and reinforce that overweight and obesity is a global health crisis today, and threatens to worsen in coming years unless we start taking drastic action", Bull said.

Over the next eight years, the United States is set to spend $4.2 trillion on treating obesity-related disease, Germany will spend $390 billion, Brazil $251 billion and the UK $237 billion if these countries do not do more to try to prevent it, the Guardian quoted the federation as saying.

In Europe, girls in Malta and boys in Greece had the highest obesity rates, at 11.3% and 16.7% of the population respectively.

The study's authors see reason for cautious optimism in the flattening obesity trends in the world's high-income countries.

The number of children and adolescents as underweight decreases it slowly since 2000 - except in South Asia and South-East and central Africa, the East and the West. Last year, 22.7% of girls and 30.7% of boys were underweight.

Dr Bull added: "WHO encourages countries to implement efforts to address the environments that today are increasing our children's chance of obesity".

The WHO's Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (ECHO) urges all countries to "aim particularly to reduce consumption of cheap, ultra-processed, calorie dense, nutrient poor foods", and to practice "responsible marketing" to children and adolescents.
