Government pledges to tackle ethnic inequalities in schools

Theresa May challenged by black student over stop and search

Meeting campaigners at 10 Downing Street, Mrs May admitted the findings were "uncomfortable" and said there would be "nowhere to hide" for public bodies which fail to respond.

A review of pupil exclusion in schools will be announced with a focus on those most likely to be affected.

"Britain has come along way in promoting equality and opportunity but what the data we've published today shows is that we still have a way to go if we are going to truly have a country that works for everyone".

Attempting to relaunch that agenda, she published the findings of a "Race Disparity Audit" which pulled together existing data from across sectors such as health, education, employment and the criminal justice system and analyzed it to discover how ethnicity affects people's lives.

Ministers have laid bare the shocking gaps in wealth, health and crime rates between different races by setting up a website with statistics on every aspect of society. Around 7.5 percent said they were Asian or Asian British - those with Indian backgrounds made up the largest section of this group, followed by those from Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds - and around 3.3 percent described themselves as black, African/Caribbean, or black British.

'We are concerned that the prime minister's remarks last week about the racial disparities audit presented an overly pessimistic picture of modern Britain.

A study published previous year by the Sutton Trust, an education charity, found that while poverty lowered educational outcomes, disadvantaged students from Chinese, Bangladeshi and black African backgrounds tended to perform better than their white working-class peers.

■ Pakistani and Bangladeshi workers received the lowest average hourly pay of £11.42, while Indian workers received the highest on £15.81.

White, working-class children performed badly in schools and black people are more likely to be arrested in some areas of the country.

The audit also showed how some white British groups were falling behind in education compared with Chinese and Asian groups.

■ Black defendants in Crown Court cases were the most likely to be remanded in custody.

Nearly 8 in 10 mixed race people (79%) said they felt British.

However, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport - which carried out the survey - warned that the reliability of the data could be affected by small numbers of respondents from black, mixed and other ethnic backgrounds.

Just over one fifth of white people in the region are categorised as economically inactive compared to more than one third of other ethnic groups.

The figures were revealed on a new Government website set up to document the way people from different ethnic grounds are treated by public services.

Meanwhile, Labour have accused Theresa May of adding "fuel to the fire" instead of tackling "burning injustices" as the findings of the audit were released.

But first secretary of state Damian Green said the audit provided an unprecedented degree of transparency into the impact of ethnicity, and would "tell us how well we are doing as a society in ensuring that all can thrive and prosper".
