Singapore Grand Prix 2017: What we learned from qualifying

Ferrari driver Vettel set a time quick enough for pole position on his first run in Q3, during which all drivers used ultra-soft rubber, with a 1m39.669s.

"I need to calm down".

Vettel was 11th in Friday's second free practice session, and he took a chunk out of one of the circuit's walls in the final pre-qualifying run-out on Saturday.

Vettel came into the weekend trailing chief title rival Lewis Hamilton by a slender three points, though Singapore's twisty streets were expected to provide Ferrari with a chance to claw back some momentum in the championship fight.

The result left Ricciardo slightly disappointed but the Australian remained confident he could win the race on Sunday. "I said the Ferrari could be a problem, and now it's Red Bull", Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda told Sky Sports television.

"I am happy we got the vehicle where it deserved to be, then we take it from there", Vettel said. "We've been quickest in every single session this weekend but then the one that really counts, unfortunately you could just see that, once you get to that crucial part of qualifying, the drivers have extracted everything there was out of the vehicle and we just don't have that last little bit".

"I knew we had it in us".

"We made some progress from the morning and even though we were the quickest in FP1, I still wanted to get more out of the auto and the set up in the afternoon".

That in itself could be a tough task, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen also ahead of the Briton and Singapore a notoriously hard circuit for overtaking.

"You always go for it if there is a gap and it is possible", Verstappen added. The auto was tricky but was getting better, better and better. I thought Red Bull would be as quick as they were.

"Here, what I've seen today, Red Bull is outstanding". I gave it everything and more. "So I needed to control the slides and the wheel slips more than I would wanted to and the pace is just slow", Bottas explained.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh for Renault ahead of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, who put both McLarens in the top 10 a day after the former champions agreed to swap Honda power for Renault in 2018.
