Lawmakers Vote To Make California A 'Sanctuary State'

California Lawmakers pass a Senate bill that would turn the state into a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants. If passed, it would limit state and local law enforcement agencies from communicating with federal immigration authorities and prevent state and local police departments from questioning people on immigration violations.

California's lower chamber passed the bill on Friday.

Given Gov. Brown's scathing criticism of Trump and the state's commitment to impeding his agenda, there's a good chance he will sign the legislation.

The approval would send it for a signature from Brown, who announced his support this week after the top Senate leader, the bill's author, agreed to water it down and preserve authority for jail and prison officials to cooperate with immigration officers in many cases.

"Now, more than ever, it is imperative that California law clearly distinguish state and local law enforcement officers from federal deportation agents", said Pasquarella.

Kevin De León, D-Los Angeles, said his legislation doesn't detract from the ultimate goal of local law enforcement in the state: keeping Californians safe. "The only thing this bill provides a sanctuary for is risky criminals", said Assemblyman James Gallagher, a Republican from Nicolaus. The bill-which Wiener introduced the skeleton of mere hours after his Sacramento swearing-in last year-would essentially force California cities to approve a certain amount of new housing each year, one way or another.

But the law has backers too: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, who simply called it "a reasonable streamlining bill", and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff, who said in August, "We need to plan and prepare for accommodating diverse populations and more dense development in our existing footprint". "We put our values into action". The California Sheriffs' Association continues to oppose it.

Democrats argued that the bill would heighten public safety by building trust between undocumented immigrants and police, encouraging crime victims to come forward.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions can not follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to so-called sanctuary cities for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies.
