Global hunger on rise, say United Nations food agencies

The UN says global hunger levels have risen for the first time in a decade

The world body further said that some 815 million people were hungry a year ago, an increase of 38 million than 2015.

Addressing food insecurity and malnutrition in conflict-affected situations can not be "business as usual", alerts the new edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017, Building Resilience for Peace and Food Security.

Children drink from a tap during recess at a UNICEF supported primary school inside Bukasi internally displaced people's camp, in Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria.

Some 155 million children under 5 suffer from stunted (short for their age), the report found, while 52 million children are underweight (low weight for height).

An estimated 41 million children are now overweight and anaemia among women and adult obesity are also cause for concern, the report added. These trends are a outcome not only of conflict and climate change, but also profound changes in eating habits and economic downturns. This has set off alarm bells we can not afford to ignore: we will not end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030 unless we address all the factors that undermine food security and nutrition.

Sánchez Cantillo points to three main drivers of world hunger and malnutrition: conflict and violence, weather related events, and economic slowdowns. This study does not present a favorable outlook for the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goal of ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. Numbers of hungry began to rise in 2014. While the number is still below the 900 million hungry people registered in 2000, the United Nations warned that the increase "is cause for great concern".

The proportion of children stunted by hunger fell to 22.9 per cent in 2016, from 29.5 per cent in 2005.

A year ago the proportion of the world's population affected by hunger rose for the first time in more than a decade, to 11 percent - up from 10.6 percent in 2015. The figure represents an increase of 38 million over the previous year.

In fact, the United Nations registered more overweight and obese children in most regions of the world and in all regions for adults.

Levels of child stunting are still unacceptably high in some regions, and if current trends continue, the SDG target on reducing child stunting by 2030 will not be reached, according to the report. This is the price we are paying for the recession, conflicts and climate change altogether.

Currently, Bangladesh has got 24.4 million undernourished people or in other words 15.1 percent of its population is not having enough to meet their minimum daily diets.

Some 20 million people are at risk of starvation in parts of South Sudan, Somalia, northeast Nigeria and Yemen where violent conflicts have created much of the food crisis. "This is an indictment of humanity", said World Food Programme chief David Beasley.

"This triggered alarm sirens he is not allowed to ignore: we eliminate hunger and all forms of malnutrition in 2030 if we address all factors that compromise food security and nutrition".

The heads of major United Nations agencies warned that without concerted action, the ambitious goal set by world governments to end hunger and prevent malnutrition by 2030 will not be reached. About 60 percent live of the 850 million people suffering from hunger live in areas affected by conflict.
