Donald Trump's London terrorist attack tweet 'unhelpful' - Met Police

US President Trump blasts 'loser terrorists' behind London train attack

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he was preparing to call British Prime Minister Theresa May after a home-made bomb on a London train injured 22 people.

He then added: "Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner", without giving details of what that meant.

A president doesn't take to Twitter to engage in a stream of thought speculation after a terrorist attack.

Again calling for the implementation of a travel ban in United States, Trump tweeted, "The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific-but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!"

Nick Timothy, a former senior aide to the British premier, dismissed Trump's tweets, saying it was "so unhelpful from [the] leader of our ally and intelligence partner".

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing, said the blaze was being treated as a "terrorist incident" and investigators were examining the remains of an improvised explosive device.

"We are chasing down suspects", said Britain's top counter-terrorism officer, Mark Rowley. Trump said in the second tweet.

Prime Minister Theresa May put Britain on the highest security level of "critical" late on Friday, meaning another attack may be imminent, and deployed soldiers and armed police to strategic locations such as nuclear power plants. So I think if there was a terrorist attack here, God forbid, that we would say that they were in the sights of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Islamic State militant group, which has said it was behind several attacks on Western cities in recent years, including two attacks in London and one in Manchester this year, claimed responsibility through its news agency, Amaq.

Stephanopoulos asked May if a travel ban is something she would reconsider in light of Friday's terror attack. "It keeps going and going, and we have to be very smart and we have to be very, very tough - perhaps we're not almost tough enough".

Trump has repeatedly pointed to his travel ban as a cornerstone of his counterterrorism platform. McMaster would not say if Trump revealed privileged information.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments to decide the travel ban's constitutionality in October.

Trump earlier this year signed an executive order blocking travelers from six majority-Muslim countries, including Syrian refugees.

In a White House statement, hours after his morning tweets, the president "pledged to continue close collaboration with the United Kingdom to stop attacks worldwide targeting innocent civilians and to combat extremism".
