United Nations says Myanmar violence is ethnic cleansing as Rohingya exodus continues

In Suu Kyi's Silence, Evidence of Growing Absence of Moral Conscience in Politics

"The support Canada is announcing today will help partners provide life-saving assistance to people fleeing violence", Bibeau said in the release.

Suu Kyi's appearance at last year's General Assembly was a landmark: her first since her party won elections in 2015 and replaced a military-dominated government.

The United Nations appealed Thursday for massive help for the almost 400,000 who fled to Bangladesh, amid concern the number could keep rising unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as "ethnic cleansing".

When did this start?: The most recent attacks began after a "Rohingya insurgent group attacked more than two dozen security sites and killed 12 people", The Guardian reported.

"The government blames Rohingya for the attacks, but journalists who visited the region found evidence that raises doubts about its claims that Rohingya set fire to their own homes".

Suu Kyi isn't technically the president.

The UN said the Myanmar army's violent crackdown was a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing", and called for "immediate steps" to end the violence.

One of the most shocking things among all the horror here is that fact many Rohingya refugees say they have had no contact with any aid agencies or worldwide aid bodies at all.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar since 25 August.

"I call on the Myanmar authorities to suspend military action, end the violence, uphold the rule of law, and recognise the right of return of all those who had to leave the country". Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been widely condemned for a lack of moral leadership and compassion in the face of the crisis, denting the Nobel peace laureate's reputation.

"One is the current situation in Rakhine state".

Aung San Suu Kyi has refused to condemn the military's actions, instead blaming "fake news" and a wholesale misinformation campaign that was aiding "terrorists".

Ali told diplomats that unofficials sources had put the Rohingya death-toll from the latest unrest in Rakhine at around 3,000, amid reports of the burning of Rohingya villages and extrajudicial killings by Myanmar's security forces and Buddhist mobs.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the situation in the country's western Rakhine state was best described as ethnic cleansing.

"The added challenge is that a lot of people are crossing the border, going to makeshift settlements, or otherwise living outside more organised structures, which could make it easier for us to reach them", he said.
