Trump signs resolution condemning white supremacists

The resolution denounces a litany of hate groups and honors Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old counter-protester who was killed during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

Trump first condemned the violence "on many sides" and drew bipartisan criticism. On Wednesday, House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said they'd agreed to a deal with the president that would protect some 800,000 DREAMERs, after Trump ordered the cancellation of the DACA immigration program.

In statements to reporters on Air Force One on Thursday, President Trump explained a conversation he'd had with Senator Tim Scott of SC, the only black Republican in the Senate.

Antifa is an anti-fascist protest movement that sometimes resorts to violent measures to fight neo-Nazis and white supremacists, which has attracted a lot of attention in the wake of the Charlottesville violence.

The president added that "because of what's happened since then with antifa, when you look at really what's happened since Charlottesville, a lot of people are saying, and people have actually written, 'Gee, Trump may have a point.' I said there's some very bad people on the other side also".

"As Americans, we condemn the recent violence in Charlottesville and oppose hatred, bigotry, and racism in all forms", Trump said in a statement announcing the signing. President Donald Trump: "Oh, I think he's on board".

In response to Trump's new remarks, Scott's office put out a statement that said in part: "Rome wasn't built in a day and to expect the President's rhetoric to change based on one 30 minute conversation is unrealistic".

Some in Trump's own administration, such as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and National Economic Council director Gary Cohn, also seemed dissatisfied with Trump's comments.

The president said that he got the point, Scott said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump and Scott had an "in-depth" discussion about the Charlottesville comments, "but the focus was primarily on solutions moving forward".

Perhaps the White House could offer some clarity on this.

Scott said Trump also brought up Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who has accused Las Vegas police of using racially motivated excessive force against him.
