Tributes paid to United Kingdom journalist 'killed by crocodile' in Sri Lanka

Financial Times

Paul McClean, a journalist working at the Financial Times, had reportedly arrived on the island a few days earlier with friends.

McClean, who grew up just outside of London in Thames Ditton, Surrey, graduated from Oxford university with a first-class honours degree in French, having spent his year overseas teaching English and translating for local police officers as the only Briton in that part of the rural Ardennes.

James Lamont, the FT's managing editor, described McClean as "a talented, energetic and dedicated young journalist".

"The crocodiles take the bodies along river and hide them in the mud, so I don't think he will be found until the day after tomorrow".

"We are in touch with them, doing all we can to help during this hard time".

People saw that the young journalist from Surrey was waving his hands in the air in desperation and slowly he was dragged down under water at a lagoon named Crocodile Rock situated near Arugam Bay.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are assisting the family of a British man who has died in Sri Lanka". His most recent FT story explored the threat to champagne production from climate change.

"There were a large crowd of Sri Lankan men surrounding them and they had bits of paper".

It's understood he was dragged into a lagoon while washing his hands. The official said the body has been sent for autopsy.

In April, a 13-year-old girl was attacked and dragged underwater by a crocodile at Pulnewa Lake in Galnewa, according to the Daily Mail. Authorities often warn residents and tourists to steer clear of marshy areas, especially during monsoon season.

The victim, Paul McClean, along with a group of his friends was on holiday in Sri Lanka and had visited the beach in Panama. Last year, a 60-year-old man was killed by a crocodile while fishing in the Paayindan River in Sammanthurai. He was a great kid, an Everton fan, super bright.
