Sampha Took Home The 2017 Mercury Prize For His Album 'Process'

Sampha's Process wins the Mercury Prize

His debut album, Process, was crowned the victor of the coveted prize during a ceremony on Thursday (14Sep17), and he dedicated his victory to his parents.

The album prevailed in a stylistically diverse and closely competitive field, which included entries from the global pop juggernaut Ed Sheeran, the grime contender Stormzy and brooding, indie rock auteurs the xx.

He took home the album of the year award for his debut Process, defeating Sheeran's Divide and Stormzy's Gang Signs & Prayer as well as nine other shortlisted records.

The event was hosted by Lauren Laverne; the award handed out by actor and DJ Idris Elba, who paid tribute to "an awesome array of artists". "He brought the audience to silence performing his single, "(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano" during the ceremony to be met with the wildest of cheers.

Asked how he might spend the £25,000 prize money, Sampha said: 'I kind of want a studio or put it way and save it up, saving is always good'.

Host Lauren Laverne said his win was the result of the longest-ever deliberation by Mercury judges, which this year included Jamie Cullum, Ella Eyre, Marcus Mumford and Jessie Ware.

The nominees all performed live, save for Ed Sheeran, who sent a message of thanks via video from Miami. The Mercury Prize started out strong with Primal Scream's Screamadelica winning in 1992 and Suede's self-titled debut winning in 1993.

The 2016 Mercury Prize went to grime hip-hop artist Skepta, for his album "Konnichiwa" in recognition of a resurgent homegrown genre.
