Iowa stifles Cowboys run game, Wyoming drops season opener

Wyoming vs. Nebraska Football

The Cowboys ran for only 59 yards.

When things opened up for the Cowboys, they dropped the ball.

The final pass Allen threw during the first game this season was the same.

The Hawkeyes staved the prospective No. 1 draft pick Josh Allen off in a 24-3 win over Wyoming in Kinnick on Saturday.

Phil Parker wasn't lying when he said Iowa's defense is good.

Johnson's wasn't the only missed opportunity of the day.

After this game, the feeling wasn't good, but it was just one game.

Late in the second quarter, UW forced a turnover and had the ball at Iowa's 43-yard line.

The blunder gave the Hawkeyes good field position and they quickly scored a touchdown to go up 14-3 before the half.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the defense Saturday afternoon was its ability to make up for the turnovers its own offense had.

Allen, a junior quarterback who has National Football League scouts drooling (12 scouts from seven different teams were at Saturday's game), was quite pedestrian. But all the offense could make of them was three points.

After the Cowboys' field goal early in the second quarter, the Hawkeyes held them scoreless the rest of the game.

UW averaged 35.9 points per game last fall. Getting an opponent's best already was something Allen was expecting.

To the dismay of the 12 scouts from seven National Football League teams in attendance, Allen's 36-yard gem to Johnson was a rarity.

Highly touted quarterback or not, Bohl said after the game he knew his team would have to go back to the drawing board after what they saw Saturday.

"I saw the ball in the air, and I was anxious if I was going to run too far", Johnson said. "I'm just really thankful for my teammates".
