It is the largest award so far in a lawsuit that claims that Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn consumers about talcum powder's potential cancer risks.

He said that Echeverria, who was dying due to cancer, "really didn't want sympathy", instead she wanted to help other women across the United States who have been using the talcum powder for decades and are suffering from ovarian cancer as a result.

The jury's award included $68m (£53m) in compensatory damages and $340m (£265m) in punitive damages after seeing internal documents that, according to Robinson, "showed the jury that Johnson and Johnson knew about the risks of talc and ovarian cancer". In May, a St. Louis, Missouri, jury ordered the company to pay $110.5 million to a woman in Virginia who was diagnosed with cancer in 2012.

The 63-year-old claimed she developed terminal ovarian cancer after decades of using J&J's products. She added that they sympathize with the women suffering from ovarian cancer, but scientific evidences state that the company's talcum powder is safe. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, classifies the genital use of talc-based body powder as "possibly carcinogenic to humans", as CNN reports. Berg told the New York Post she turned down a $1.3 million out-of-court settlement "because [she] didn't want to sign a confidentiality clause". She was regularly using the baby powder since 1950 till 2016.

In her tearful testimony, she talked about how her daughter cared for her after her diagnosis 10 years ago.

Talcum powder was used in the 19th century to soothe skin irritation from medicated plasters, and Johnson's Baby Powder debuted in 1893, according to the company website.

Echeverria alleged in her lawsuit that she developed the cancer "as a direct and proximate result of the unreasonably unsafe and defective nature of talcum powder", ABC News reports.

Most of these studies focused on whether the chance of a woman getting ovarian cancer increased if particles of talcum or baby powder traveled through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovary via sanitary napkins, diaphragms, condoms or direct application, American Cancer Society reported. Six other women joined her lawsuit.

The consumer goods company said it would appeal against the verdict.

Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in New Jersey, faces thousands of claims from women who say they developed cancer due to using the firm's products to address concerns about vaginal odour and moisture.
