Opioid commission public health emergency recommendation turned down by Trump

The Latest Trump praises Xi for new UN sanctions

President Trump announced Thursday he is officially declaring the opioid crisis a national emergency.

Specifically, the commission said a national emergency would allow the administration to remove restrictions on where Medicaid patients can receive treatment and to negotiate lower prices on naloxone - a life-saving overdose antidote - for government units.

"It is a serious problem the likes of which we have never had", Trump said at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf resort, where he is on a "working vacation".

The governor and a senator from West Virginia support the president calling the opioid epidemic a national emergency.

Donald Trump is not mentally equipped for the presidency, and his basic instability is pushing the United States toward a military confrontation with North Korea. He noted that the administration should talk to the youth and tell them that drugs are not good and are "really bad for you in every way", The Washington Post shared.

George's son Zach Ziehm died from an overdose last year, after three years and four months of sobriety.

"The opioid crisis is an emergency, and I'm saying officially right now", Trump said. But this is a national emergency and we are drawing documents now to so attest.

Sessions declared that the opioid crisis is a "winnable war" and urged law enforcement to pursue prosecutions for illegal possession of prescriptions just two days after the opioid commission released its interim report that called for a health-based response. "While we have made progress in curbing drug abuse, we need bolder solutions - like those detailed in the commission's report".

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, the White House said in a statement Trump had "instructed his administration to use all appropriate emergency and other authorities to respond to the crisis caused by the opioid epidemic".

Under the Stafford Act, federal and state agencies would have access to the approximately $1.4 billion federal disaster relief fund.

The money does not help with detox, residential treatment or crisis programs, all of which are often used to help opioid addicts recover. It is not clear what the president's declaration will signify for a complex, long-term public health problem.

"If you declare a state of emergency, you can move federal resources more easily between programmatic areas", said Michael Fraser, executive director of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
