Gators suspend seven football players for season opener against MI

Florida wide receiver Antonio Callaway right runs past South Carolina linebacker Bryson Allen Williams after a reception during the first half

Florida has suspended troubled receiver Antonio Callaway and six other players for the team's season opener against MI.

Callaway, a junior from Miami, has had multiple issues at Florida, but this will be his first suspension for a game.

Callaway's possible suspension has been a hot topic since his May 13 citation for marijuana possession while he was a passenger in the vehicle with Kendrick Williams, a 40-year-old Gainesville man with a history of brushes with the law.

According to ESPN's Edward Aschoff, the players were suspended for using student ID cards, which can be used as charge cards, to make improper purchases at the school bookstore. In July, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police found marijuana in his pocket during a traffic stop. It was the first off-the-field offense for each player since joining the team. The other player that was likely to start that got suspended is junior defensive end Keivonnis Davis. The defensive line depth will be the thing hurt most by the suspensions, outside of losing their best receiver. His 5 quarterback hurries last season tied for second on the team.

The two powerhouse programs are set to battle September 2 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Houston, Telfort and Miller are all true freshmen, with Telfort being a Booker T. Washington High alum and Houston hailing from American Heritage-Plantation. The other two suspended defensive linemen - Desir-Jones and Smith - had a chance to play on special teams.

Being without Callaway could be big since he's the team's top offensive playmaker. And number two, learn to talk the guy next to him. From there, there is limited experience outside of the starting offensive line.

According to Sports Illustrated, only two of the seven total players suspended against MI was likely to actually start in that game.
