Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper suffers ugly-looking knee injury

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Hunter Strickland delivers during the eighth inning of the first baseball game of a split doubleheader against the Washington Nationals Sunday Aug. 13 2017 in Washington

Harper flew in the air and appeared to be in agony as he hit the ground while clutching onto the front of his knee.

After writhing in pain on the ground for a couple of minutes, Harper was helped off the field with assistance from trainer Paul Lessard and hitting coach Rick Schu.

There has been no update on Harper's injury.

The Nationals and Giants game had already been delayed for several hours due to rain, so Nationals fans were already a little annoyed. Major League Baseball, not the Nationals, decided if and when the game would be played because the Giants don't return to Washington this season. The series opener Friday was postponed after a lengthy rain delay and is set to be a part of a day-night doubleheader Sunday.

Harper, the 2015 NL MVP, is hitting.327 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs this season.

Harper was replaced by Andrew Stevenson, who took over in center field with Brian Goodwin moving to right. Ryan, 37, hasn't played in the majors this season but could be a September call-up if he shows some power at the plate. Howard signed a minors deal with the Braves at the start of the 2017 season, but was released by the team in May after an 11-game stint in Triple-A Gwinnett.
