Violence in Virginia Prompts Emergency Demonstration in Oakland

A group of alt-right activists marched through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville chanting

Protesters gathered to hear speakers and then marched peacefully downtown, chanting and waving signs and banners.

The lone victim killed during a peaceful counter-protest against white supremacist hate during the Charlottesville, Va., rally Saturday, has been identified as Heather Heyer.

The driver, 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr., has been charged with second degree murder.

A 32-year-old woman is dead after a auto plowed through a crowd of counter-protesters Saturday during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. At least 15 other people were wounded, and three other men were arrested on assorted charges related to protest violence.

At one point, a vehicle sped forward through a march of counterprotesters, mowing down people, including one woman who was killed.

The rally organizer who would only give his first name of Steven, said his group is not connected to the groups responsible for yesterday's violence down south.

The death toll includes two Virginia State Police officers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville. Altogether 35 people were treated.

The incident appears to have been intentional, and the driver of the auto was reportedly arrested shortly after. "We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides - on many sides", he said.

A group calling itself Bay Area United Against White Supremacy planned the "emergency solidarity demo" for 7 p.m.at 14th Street and Broadway, the rendezvous point for numerous demonstrations in recent years. "We are strongly, strongly against violence in any way shape or form". David Duke told reporters in Charlottesville that the rally was a turning point in fulfilling Trump's promise to take America back.

His unequivocal condemnation of the far-right demonstrators was in marked contrast to Donald Trump, whose response fell well short of singling them out.

Far-right protesters converged on the university town of Charlottesville at the weekend to demonstrate against a plan to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, who headed the Confederate army in the American Civil War.
