USA officials says confrontation with North Korea not imminent

CIA chief says'nothing imminent in US-North Korea standoff

White House officials have insisted the investigation is not created to apply additional pressure on China as it relates to North Korea despite the president's previous remarks that he would be more amenable on trade if China stopped Pyongyang's nuclear program.

They said the United States and its allies can no longer afford to stand by as North Korea pushes ahead with the development of a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.

USA intelligence does not indicate an imminent nuclear war with North Korea, the chief of the Central Intelligence Agency said Sunday, after a week of bellicose rhetoric between the two sides.

Still, he said Americans shouldn't be alarmed.

Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious should people be over the escalating tensions.

Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation", Pompeo said Trump had "made very clear that the United States finds it unacceptable for a rogue leader like Kim Jong Un to have the capacity of a ballistic missile with a warhead that is integrated and fully deliverable to the United States and hold America and the world at risk".

He said the USA has a "pretty good idea" of North Korea's intentions, but Pompeo declined to provide specifics.

North Korea warned foreign diplomats to leave Pyongyang in 2013 when it suspended work at a joint inter-Korean industrial park and threatened missile strikes on U.S. Pacific bases, notably in Guam and Hawaii.

BEDMINSTER, N.J./BEIJING - President Donald Trump issued a new threat to North Korea on Friday, saying what he called USA military solutions were "locked and loaded" as Pyongyang accused him of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.

North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper said in an editorial Saturday that the North's army is "capable of fighting any war the USA wants".

U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear how the U.S. will respond to North Korea's provocations, and hopefully, the regime will understand, Pompeo added.

"President Trump inherited a mess", Graham said.

North Korea has been especially provocative in recent months, testing a series of new short-, medium-, intermediate-, and long-range missiles.

A Chinese state-run newspaper said on Friday that China should remain neutral if North Korea launches an attack that threatens the United States, sounding a warning for Pyongyang over its plans to fire missiles near Guam. "All those smart people who are criticizing his rhetoric and his policy, how well did you do?" "There's nothing imminent", Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday".
