Trump issues vague military threat to Venezuela, Caracas calls out his 'craziness'

Additional Sanctions by United States Proving of Little Value in Venezuela

Venezuela's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino said in a tweet that Juan Carlos Caguaripano, the alleged ringleader of the August 6 attack on a military base near Valencia, had been captured.

A US Republican senator says Congress would "obviously" not authorize war against Venezuela after President Donald Trump threatened the crisis-hit South American country with a military action.

And he stressed that they were issued by Trump a day after the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ratified his willingness to have talks with his US counterpart, adding "The moment has come for the worldwide community to stop USA aggression against the Venezuelan people".

"Sanctions will worsen the situation of the people of Venezuela, who are already suffering from crippling inflation and a lack of access to adequate food and medicine".

Trump has criticized Maduro many times throughout the past month, saying in a July 17 statement that the leader "dreams of becoming a dictator", adding that "the United States will not stand by as Venezuela crumbles".

Senators from the oil states of the US urged President Donald Trump to not block oil shipments from Venezuela as part of USA sanctions against the country, saying it could raise costs for US fuel consumers. During the remarks, Trump also announced that he will speak by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday night about North Korea.

"I'm not going to rule out a military option for Venezuela".

The president did not answer a question about whether American troops would lead a potential operation as the president Nicholas Maduro is on way of consolidating power, Trump responded by explicitly not ruling out military force.

Trump said Friday that he wouldn't rule out a "military option" in response to the crisis.

The US administration has been increasing pressure on Maduro in recent weeks, but especially since the election of the Constituent Assembly, imposing more individual sanctions on government officials, who have included the Venezuelan president himself.

Even as Maduro stressed on the importance of the new assembly, protests and violent demonstrations keep on rocking Venezuela.

The Trump administration issued individual sanctions against Maduro and about two dozen socialist loyalists. U.S. Treasury sanctions now ban Maduro from entering the United States.
