The fallout over that Google diversity memo rages on

Sundar Pichai Google

As controversy continues to swirl around James Damore, the Google engineer who was sacked after writing a memo about gender diversity at the company, the longtime New York Times columnist David Brooks has placed blame squarely on the shoulders of Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

She concluded that there was no truth in Dimore's suggestion that there is a biological reason there are fewer women in tech leadership.

Memegen, an internal forum that uses images overlaid with amusing captions, was filled with irreverent posts that openly mocked how an email discussing the memo from Sundar Pichai, Google's chief executive, had leaked to the media so quickly.

"Google's firing of James Damore is the flashpoint here", said the pro-Trump Posobiec, known for peddling conspiracy theories such as "Pizzagate".

But Google executives, including the chief executive officer and the chief of diversity, deemed the document to be in violation of the company's code of conduct because it "perpetuated gender stereotypes". "For many, including myself, working at Google is a major part of their identity, nearly like a cult with its own leaders and saints, all believed to righteously uphold the sacred motto of 'Don't be evil, '" the op-ed read.

"The mob would have set upon anyone who openly agreed with me or even tolerated my views", he said.

In an essay published in The Wall Street Journal on Friday, Mr. Damore said "there was no outcry or charge of misogyny" when he shared the memo initially. "I think it is".

Now if only Google could get its own employees to be as careful about not spilling confidential information about co-workers to parties on the outside. Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and anxious they may be "outed" publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall.

Damore argued that this created an environment where only certain opinions could be voiced and slammed the tech giant in its attempt to "silence open and honest discussion".

One ad reads "Goolag", a play on words referring to gulags, the Soviet forced-labor camps from the 20th century. Brown locked her account this week after being inundated with hateful tweets for her critical response to an engineer's controversial memo attacking Google's diversity efforts.

Damore's Twitter account has nearly 60,000 followers despite starting days ago. With one lengthy post, a Google employee ignited a fierce debate about the company's culture. The organizers motto is "Google is an anti-free speech monopoly".

Someone with access to an employee-only version of Google Plus made screenshots of messages written by Google employees pledging to create blacklists of colleagues not supportive of the company's diversity measures.
