Nigerian forces in 'unauthorized search' of United Nations camp

Borno APC Slams Shekau Capture Rumours

The United Nations and the Nigerian Army on Friday clashed over the invasion of a building occupied by the world body on Friday in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The military confirmed the incident in a separate statement, saying the action was in line with the ongoing search efforts.

Edward Kallon, the Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria has expressed grave concern following the search.

"I am very pleased to report that our relationship of collaboration and trust are intact at this stage", the United Nations deputy humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria said.

"At about 2 am early this morning, Nigeria Army troops in trucks are conducting.[a] search on UN Red Roof Humanitarian camp and forced their way into the property", said the internal document.

"I am very pleased to report that our relationship of collaboration and trust is intact, and at this stage, we are focussed on the work ahead to ensure that the millions of vulnerable people in the Northeast are supported with lifesaving humanitarian aid".

United Nations in Nigeria has reacted over what it termed the Nigerian Army's "unauthorised" search on its base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri.

The statement said the army carried out a search on the property because it had credible intelligence that some Boko Haram insurgents had infiltrated the area.

Rumours have been swirling in Maiduguri that the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has been hiding out in a compound with the same name.

"In the last one week, cordon and search operations were conducted in Jiddari -Polo, Muna Garage, Jakana amongst several other areas".

General Ibrahim Attahiru, who commands operations in Borno state where Maiduguri is located, said on Saturday that the army "will continue to work toward providing and enabling a conductive environment to United Nations agencies to enhance their operations".

"On the whole, operation in the general area was successfully concluded but no arrest was made because the suspects were not found".

He said:"The Nigerian Army is very aware of the need of the United Nations agencies to discharge their duties and we are ready to support them".

All UN staff members in Maiduguri were ordered to work from home by the note, which warned of demonstrations against the organisation and other foreign groups active in the area.

More than $650 million has been given by the worldwide community to the response this year, though agencies say more is needed to keep the crisis from worsening.

"I don't think the United Nations should be angry (over the search) unless it is supporting the insurgents", the security expert added.
